Job Description

Jacaranda Health is seeking an experienced Clinical Lead to manage our growing clinical team and run all aspects of clinical operations for our growing chain of clinics in Nairobi. We are seeking a healthcare manager to join our management team and help lead growth.

The ideal candidate will have strong strategic judgement, can work well with nursing staff, handle supplies and logistics, is excited about providing excellent care to women, understands the business side of managing facilities, and is tirelessly committed to quality control.

Our preference is for an clinician or specialist who also has excellent management experience, but we will also consider experienced midwifes or non-clinicians with the right set of clinical leadership experience.

We are a growing business, and we need to hit ambitious targets to achieve our goals of sustainability. The position will at first be responsible for care in our first mobile and fixed clinic, and all new facilities that we set up.

The Clinical Lead will work closely with our marketing director, finance and business leads, and managing director – as well as our external advisors, who include some of the most respected names in maternal health in Kenya and globally.

Responsibilities
  • Manage clinical nursing staff and all aspects of clinical operations
  • Work with clinical staff on quality improvement processes
  • Help coordinate purchase of supplies and equipment and the setup of physical space
  • Sit on Jacaranda’s management team, and help drive strategy for growth and service delivery
  • Provide clinical input into implementation of our systems (e.g. technology systems, marketing and outreach)
  • Work closely with external advisors (medical doctors) to design, review and help implement processes, workflows, clinical protocols, and quality control for Jacaranda clinics
Required Education, Experience and Qualifications
  • Significant experience working in clinical operations management in a leadership role – e.g., running hospitals or complex clinical programs (management experience needs to be across multiple departments, rather than an in-charge role)
  • Enthusiasm, altruism, integrity, and a commitment to providing high-quality care to low-income women
  • Excellent people skills, and commitment to managing both nurses and patients with respect
  • Willingness to work tirelessly to make this Jacaranda Health the best service provider in East Africa.
  • Degree in management or strong experience with health business management preferred

Anaesthesia Nurse and Midwife Trainer - Merlin (UK) Jobs in in Boma, Pibor County Jonglei State (South Sudanese Nationals)

Merlin (UK) an International Non-Governmental Organization specializing in the provision of health care worldwide is looking for qualified South Sudanese nationals registered with the South Sudan Medical council with strong experiences in health services delivery to fill following vacant posts based in Boma, Pibor County Jonglei State.

(1) Anaesthesia Nurse (1)

Overall objective of the position

Bases in Boma Hospital at Pibor County, the Anesthesia Nurse will be responsible for the delivery of anaesthetic preparations to patients in the Operation Theatre.

The Anesthesia Nurse Works closely with, and is supervised by the Hospital surgeon in the Operation Theatre.

S/he also works closely with CHWs as Ward in charge.

Responsibilities of Anaesthesia Nurse
  • Deliver general and spinal anesthesia to patients requiring major surgery.
  • Deliver local anesthesia to patients requiring minor surgery.
  • Responsible for monitoring consumption, regular inventory, quantifying and ordering of medical supplies required by the operation theatre.
  • Responsible for the maintenance of standard antisepsis in the operation theatre.
  • Quantify and promptly order logistical requirements needed for sterilization.
  • Responsible for adequate sterilization of re-usable materials for all departments of the hospital.
  • Ensures proper packing, labeling, and storage of sterile materials, and inventory of supplies in theater.
  • Supervises and monitors activities of other operation theatre personnel.
  • Assist in setting up and performance of cases by opening of sterile pack, instruments and supplies according to sterile technique whenever necessary.
  • Prepare sterile field including sponge and needle counts, documenting these on patient records.
  • Where necessary act as scrub nurse or circulating nurse as directed, maintaining integrity of sterile field.
  • Ensure clean up of operating room following surgery, including proper disposal of used supplies/sharps.
  • Carry out counseling of patients.
  • Report on operation theatre activities including regular updating of the Operation register book to hospital surgeon/medical superintendent.
  • Participate in in-service training of hospital personnel – training plans made and training implemented.
  • Train OT local staff on basic administration of anesthesia and intra operative patient monitoring.
  • Ensure resuscitation trolley/tray supplies kept in working order and drugs maintained appropriately.
  • Perform pre and post operative assessment of all patients for operation.
  • Responsible for booking and scheduling of elective patients for surgical intervention.
  • Together with medical/surgical/maternity staff, responsible for post operative care on the wards and follow up of discharged surgical/obstetric patients.
  • Responsible for monitoring and keeping a record of all referred cases from outside Boma.
In general
  • To carry-out any other duties and/or responsibilities assigned by his/her immediate supervisor.
  • To be accountable, give feedback and appropriate information regarding the requested or ongoing tasks to the person or department, for the duties and performances he/she is carrying out for them.
Qualifications
  • Current nursing or surgical tech/ anesthetic assistant licensed in home country.
  • Ability to both scrub and circulate.
  • Knowledge of O.R. procedures, standards and equipment.
  • At least two years relevant experience in O.R, anaesthesia and Nursing practice
  • Previous work experience in Sub-Saharan Africa –added advantage.
(2) Midwife Trainer

Overall Objective

Based in Boma Hospital at Pibor County, the Midwife will participate in the delivery of maternal child health services, training of MCHW and TBA’s in Boma PHCC+ and 3 PHCUs.

He/she will be supervised by the Medical Superintendant/PHC Supervisor in the delivery of static and outreach Reproductive health care services.

Responsibilities of the Midwife Trainer
  • She/he will be responsible for the management of patients and clients in Antenatal clinics and Maternity Unit.
  • With other midwives ensures there is full coverage of services at the Maternity and Antenatal Units
  • Conduct regular supervision of maternity ward and ANC staff in order to provide on-the-job training, identify areas for improvement, and plan appropriate training activities.
  • Ensure that patients are received appropriately in the ward, all data are recorded correctly in the admissions, discharges books etc.
  • Ensures and provides total care to mothers during pregnancy with emphasis on identifying high risk cases and provision of health education.
  • To maintain personal contact with patients, take note of their complaints, report if necessary and ensure confidentiality.
  • Supervise and conduct deliveries and ensure that aseptic technique is adhered to in carrying out deliveries.
  • Ensure and provide care to mothers during labour, delivery and peurpeium with emphasis on keeping proper records, adequate use of partograms, use of drugs and prevention of complications to mother and baby.
  • Ensure and provides care to mothers during puerperium, with emphasis on prevention of infection and successful breastfeeding.
  • To manage obstetrical emergencies within her capacity and refer complicated cases to the medical superintendent present.
  • On job trainings for enrolled midwives, MCHWs, nurses and TBAs.
  • Supervise and provide guidance to TBAs attached to the PHCC+.
  • To participate in primary health care activities in the hospital and outreaches.
  • Train and supervise CHW, MCHWs and TBA’s in providing essential antenatal care and assisting normal deliveries in the PHCC+.
  • Organise periodic on job training for MCHW and other staff in consultation with the PHCC in charge.
  • Ensuring availability of supplies, equipments and drugs in RH unit and keeping inventory.
  • Ensure proper record keeping of all input and output and conduct inventories on regular basis in the maternity department.
  • In collaboration with Nutrition Nurse participate in Growth Monitoring and Nutritional screening of under fives.
  • Liaise with Merlin’s Medical Superintendent and Hospital Matron for regular supervision of RH activities in both the OPD and IPD at Boma. Emphasis includes: OPD MCH (including EPI), family planning, gender based violence response, PMTCT, adolescent sensitive sexual and RH services and the maternity ward activities.
  • Participate in compiling the monthly activities report.
  • Attend HOD meetings.
  • Ensure universal infection prevention practices are in place and take part in material disinfection and sterilization process
  • Organise monthly meeting with TBA’s and provide the necessary technical support in consultation with the PHC supervisor and Medical superintendent
  • Maintain open and regular communication with the rest of the Merlin medical team in Boma in order to ensure information sharing, team cooperation and consistency of programs.
  • Liaise with the Merlin Senior Health Coordinator, when appropriate, to ensure standardization of RH services provided and for RH technical support and reporting
  • Collaborate with the Community Health Committees, MCHWs, CHWs and TBA’s in mobilization and sensitization of the community to improve their obstetric health seeking behaviour.
  • Assist MCHWs and enrolled nursed to manage MCH unit to ensure smooth patient flow and reduced waiting time;
  • Write monthly reports of MCH activities taking place in the PHCC+ and deliver to the Medical superintendent
  • Participate in support, promotion and provision of PMTCT and HIV/AIDS services in Merlin supported health facilities in Boma.
  • Participate in the distribution of Community Based MCHWs and TBAs’ Consumables/kits.

Qualifications / Essential Requirements:
  • Qualified Certified Midwife/Comprehensive Nurse with at least three years practical experience in a hospital setting.
  • Awareness and understanding of HIV/AIDS, PMTCT and GBV issues.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of family planning commodities and their appropriate use.
  • Prior experience in health promotion and/or sensitisation in RH issues.
  • Experienced at capacity building or facilitating training, mentoring or coaching of subordinate staff.
  • Fluent and clear spoken English with good writing skills
  • Good organizational and communication skills
  • Experience in writing clear and concise reports
  • Ability to keep calm and work under stressful conditions
  • Polite manner and respectful of others
Desirable Requirements:
  • Completion of Emergency Obstetrics Lifesaving Skills training
  • Training in IMCI
  • Five or more years proven practical experience
  • Computer skills; including Window programs – Excel, Word, Outlook, etc
  • Prior experience working for an NGO

Job Purpose

The Community Health field Coordinator will be in-charge of implementation of AFREN program in Mandera West District.

The program focuses on establishing a comprehensive community health program that targets provision of basic Community health care to children and women through Community health Workers (CHWS) and Community Health Extension workers.

Key Accountabilities
  • Supervise formation of community health units in Mandera West through Selection, training and mobilization of Community health workers (CHWs) and Community Health Extension Workers(CHEWs) in collaboration with the District Health Management team.
  • Support provision of Basic Health kits to CHWs and CHEWs in the District.
  • Supervise community level management of simple childhood illnesses which include Fever, diarrhoea through CHWs.
  • Provide community health Units with a basic kit that includes ORS, Basic antibiotics and other basic health items.
  • Work in collaboration with DHMT in strengthening the link between Community and the health facilities through the Community health Committees.
  • Provide Support to DHMT in monitoring and Evaluation of community Health services on quarterly basis in order to increase the quality of Community level health services.
  • Work closely with Local leaders and Community health committees in raising Health awareness and educate communities on maternal child health issues in the communities.
  • Supervise on regular basis Community Mobilization activities in order to improve health seeking behaviours in the community.
  • Work with Community health committees in streamlining community level Referral for all sick children in the community.
  • Conduct regular meetings with Targeted community groups in order to address social, cultural and traditional barriers affecting health.
  • Compile Health education and community outreach reports on timely basis and submit them to the program Manager.
  • Represent Save the Children in Community level meetings and other meetings as adviced by the program Manager.
  • Comply with Save the Children UK policies and practices with respect to child protection, health and safety, equal opportunity and other relevant policies and procedures.
Requirements
  • A Bachelors degree in Health or Advanced Diploma in Health related field.
  • At least three years of experience in running Community health programs.

Declaration of Vacancies

Pursuant to the provisions of Sections 8, 9 and 10 of the Independent Policing Oversight Authority Act, 2011 (No. 35 of 2011), the Selection Panel invites applications from suitably qualified persons for the positions of Chairperson and seven (7) Members of the Board of the Independent Policing Oversight Authority.

The functions of the Chairperson and Members of the Board shall be, among other things, to:-

(i) Investigate any complaints related to disciplinary or criminal offences committed by any member of the Service and make recommendations to the relevant authorities;

(ii) Receive and investigate complaints by members of the Service;

(iii) Monitor and investigate policing operations affecting members of the public;

(iv) Monitor, review and audit investigations and actions taken by the Internal Affairs Unit of the Service in response to complaints against the Police;

(v) Conduct inspections of Police premises, including detention facilities under the control of the Service;

(vi) Co-operate with other institutions on issues of Police oversight, including other State organs in relation to services offered by them;

(vii) Review the patterns of Police misconduct and the functioning of the internal disciplinary process;

(viii) Present any information it deems appropriate to an inquest conducted by a court of law;

(ix) Take all reasonable steps to facilitate access to the Authority’s services for the public;

(x) Subject to the Constitution and the laws related to freedom of information, publish findings of its investigations, monitoring, reviews and audits as it sees fit, including by means of the electronic or printed media;

(xi) Make recommendations to the Service or any State organ;

(xii) Report on all its functions under this Act or any written law; and

(xiii) Perform such other functions as may be necessary for promoting the objectives for which the Authority is established.

A. Vacancy for the position of Chairperson of the Board of the Independent Policing Oversight Authority

Number of Vacancies: 1

For appointment as Chairperson of the Board of the Independent Policing Oversight Authority, a person should:

(i) possess a degree from a university recognized in Kenya;

(ii) be qualified to be appointed as a Judge of High Court in Kenya pursuant to the provisions of Article 166 (5) of the Constitution; and

(iii) meet the requirements of Chapter Six of the Constitution.

NB: Good knowledge of Government systems will be an added advantage.

B. Vacancy for the Position of Member of the Board of the Independent Policing Oversight Authority

Number of Vacancies: 7

For appointment as a Member of the Board of the Independent Policing Oversight Authority, a person should:

(i) be a Kenyan citizen;

(ii) possess a degree from a university recognized in Kenya;

(iii) meet the requirements of Chapter Six of the Constitution;

( iv) have knowledge and experience of not less than ten (10) years in any of the following fields:-
  • Criminology
  • Medicine
  • Psychology
  • Alternative dispute resolution
  • Law
  • Security matters
  • Human rights and gender
  • Community policing
(v) have had a distinguished career in his/her respective field; and

(vi) is fit and proper to serve as a member of the Board charged with upholding and protection of ethics, professionalism, accountability and lawful conduct.

NB. Good knowledge of Government systems will be an added advantage.

C. Please Note:

(i) In compliance with Section10 (2) of the Independent Policing Oversight Authority Act, No. 35 of 2011, a person does not qualify for nomination and appointment as Chairperson or Member of the Commission if he/she:
  • is a serving police officer or has retired in the last five years.
  • has been convicted of any offence involving dishonesty or any other for which they have been sentenced to imprisonment without the option of a fine.
  • holds office in a political party.
  • is a member of parliament.
  • is an undischarged bankrupt.
  • is mentally incapacitated to perform the functions of the Board.
(ii) The names of all applicants and those shortlisted for each post shall be published in the print media after the closure of the advert.

(iii) Shortlisted candidates may be required to submit additional information and will be subjected to a public interview process.

(iv) The salary and benefits for these positions shall be determined by the Salaries and Remuneration Commission.

(v) The chairperson and members of the Board of the Authority shall hold office for one term of six (6) years.

The Donkey Sanctuary Lamu - Project Manager Job in Kenya

The Donkey Sanctuary Kenya is currently restructuring the existing donkey welfare programmes based in Lamu and is looking for a Project Manager to take this process forward.

Reporting to the Country Manager, who is based in Nairobi, you will be responsible for reviewing existing working practices and managing the team.

Overall Purpose

To be responsible for the veterinary elements of the Lamu project, community based admin, including overall budgetary control; additional responsibilities for developing and managing community based partnership programme.

Main Duties and Responsibilities
  • Ensure care and welfare of the donkeys is improved in accordance with the aims and objectives of The Donkey Sanctuary Kenya and it’s code of practice;
  • Responsibility for managing and administering project funds including the preparation of monthly financial reports for the Country Manager, and Finance/ Admin officer in Nairobi.
  • Ensure all activities are carried out in line with approved and agreed country strategy and work plans;
  • Explore and develop relations and potential collaboration with individuals and organisations (including community groups, government and non-governmental organisations);
  • Explore possibilities for sustainability mechanisms;
  • Manage and develop team and establish clear lines of communication throughout the project;
  • Ensure team work plans and key performance indicators are linked to the organisation’s objectives;
  • Ensure efficient and cost effective operation of all activities and effective management of all assets; and
  • Document all programme activities and report progress and impact through monthly progress reports to Country Manager.
Knowledge and Skills Required

Essential:
  • Degree in veterinary medicine;
  • Three years experience in veterinary work following graduation;
  • Excellent written and spoken Kiswahili;
  • Good written and spoken English;
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft packages;
  • Experience of managing a team; and
  • Current valid driving license.
Desirable:
  • Experience in community based development interventions;
  • Experience in office administration;
  • Ability to prepare and manage a budget;
  • Experience in community outreach, networking and collaboration;
  • Experience of working for an animal welfare organisation; and
  • Experience of living/working in a coastal community.
Personal Attributes:

Ability to present a positive, professional image of the organisation at all times.
