Responsibilities:
The United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON) is the UN headquarters in Africa and the representative office of the Secretary-General. UNON supports programme implementation of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT) globally, as well as other UN offices in Kenya, by providing administrative, conference and information services (www.unon.org). This post is located in the English Language Unit in the Division of Conference Services (DCS).

RESPONSIBILITIES

Under the general supervision of the Chief, Spanish Language Unit, the incumbent will:

1. Translate, subject to revision, documents covering a broad range of subjects dealt with by the United Nations, i.e., political, social legal, economic, financial, administrative, scientific and technical.

2. Identify new terminology material.

3. Consult different sources to widen knowledge of subject matters.

4. Perform other related duties as required.

Professionalism: Good writing skills; high standards of accuracy consistency and faithfulness to the spirit, style and nuances of the original text; good grasp of the subject matter; ability to use all sources of references, consultation and information relevant to text at hand; ability to maintain the established volume of output according to the UN workload standards, taking into account the difficulty of the text and the specified deadlines; be available for shift work and perform other related duties as required.

Planning and organizing: Ability to establish priorities and to plan, co-ordinate and monitor own work. Ability to allocate appropriate amount of time and resources for completing work.

Teamwork: Good coordination with others working on same document in order to ensure consistency of terminology and style; demonstrated ability to gain the support and cooperation of others in a team endeavor with sensitivity and respect for diversity.


Communication: Good interpersonal and communication skills. Ability to listen to others, correctly, interpret messages from others and respond appropriately.

Technological Awareness: Ability to keep abreast of available technology. Shows willingness to learn new technology.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
A degree from a university or from an institution of equivalent status. Must have passed the United Nations competitive examination for Spanish translators.
Work Experience:
At least two years of translation experience with the United Nations.
Languages:
A perfect command of Spanish and an excellent knowledge of at least two other official languages, as tested by the United Nations competitive examination for Spanish translators.
Other Desirable Skills:
Knowledge of other languages, official and non-official, is desirable. Familiarity with terminology databases and knowledge of relevant computer software including word-processing programs.
